AMBER

Meet AMBER!

Update 11 12 08

Amber is doing very well in foster care. She has gained 11 lb and is full of energy. She loves playing with her foster brothers and her toys. However, she has been determined to be in the late stages of heartworm disease, Stage 4 out of 5. She will need to undergo heartworm treatment before her leg can be repaired. Amber will start heartworm treatment on Thursday Nov. 13. It will be a very difficult two months for her as she will have to be confined to her crate except for leashed bathroom breaks. Her foster mom will continue to update her progress.

Amber came to SSRR from Vermilion Parish Rabies Control, a high kill shelter in Kaplan, Louisiana which is south of Lafayette. She ended up at the shelter after her owner evacuated to Florida before Hurricane Gustav . Amber is a very sweet little girl who has previously not been treated well by the humans in her life. She came to SSRR with a broken right back leg, severely underweight (she weighs only 60lbs), and is high HW+. The vet thinks the leg injury was sustained at least a year ago as she shows no sign of being in any pain and she gets along great on 3 legs! But just imagine the pain she must of been in initially, desperately needing medical attention and yet her 'owner' just left her in the yard to heal and adapt on her own.

Amber update Jan. 11, 2009

Amber has officially made it through the heartworm treatment. She is feeling great and playing all the time with her toys and her brother Tank. She loves tennis balls, her Secret Santa sent her some that squeak...they are her favorite. She is no longer confined to her crate and spends the day loose in the house with Tank. She is completely house trained and has not gotten into any trouble chewing on things that don't belong to her. Amber is up to 73lb now and is starting to fill out nicely. She has the sweetest personality ever and is really just a wonderful girl.

On January 20, we will be going to see her orthopedic surgeon again. He's going to re-do bloodwork and xrays. If all goes well and he feels good about her physical condition, he will perform the surgery on her leg that day. We are very excited about the possibility of her walking on four legs again! I will keep y'all posted as to her progress. In the meantime, here are some recent pictures of her.

Update 1 20 09

Amber underwent surgery to repair her broken leg on Jan. 20. She is now resting and recovering for the next 6 weeks before beginning physical therapy. The surgeon was very pleased with the result of the surgery and is confident her bones will heal well. She required a large bone graft from a donor dog (mastiff), a big plate, and 11 screws to hold it all together. A big THANKS to the American Rottweiler Club for their support of Amber and her medical needs. Donations are still needed to help pay for this very expensive surgery and rehabilitation.

ARC DC is assisting w/ some of her medical bills but as you can all see- $3700 has been put into this girl- not a norm for any rescue!
